Why Piastri Wouldn’t Have Benefited from Adopting Verstappen’s Two-Lap Qualifying Strategy

Race Strategies and Close Calls: Piastri vs. Verstappen in Q3

The qualifying session was intense, marked by close competition and strategic decision-making, particularly for McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and his race engineer Tom Stallard. As Piastri completed his initial Q3 lap in 1m27.560s, the anxiety in the McLaren camp was palpable. This time was marginally slower than his earlier Q2 lap of 1m27.545s, raising concerns about whether he could maintain his position against Max Verstappen, who had already demonstrated his pace in Q1 and Q2.

Piastri had another potential challenger in his teammate Lando Norris, who unfortunately miscalculated his entry speed into Turn 4, resulting in an incident that caused a red flag. This left Piastri atop the timing screens but disrupted the rhythm for the other Q3 participants, many of whom had to abort or delay their laps.

With just 8m32s remaining on the clock, the pressure was on to execute the remaining strategy efficiently. Normally, completing two low-fuel runs in Q3 entails a brief return to the garage for refueling, making the limited time a significant factor.

Verstappen’s engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, orchestrated a strategy for the reigning world champion: to fuel the RB21 for two quick laps, starting with a lightly used set of soft tires. The aim was to gather initial data before switching to fresh tires for the second lap, ideally enhancing performance on a track known for its complexity.

Piastri, however, maintained a different viewpoint. “Having already set a lap time, we didn’t see the need for another one just pushing the limits,” he explained. He noted that the time constraints made it a tricky situation. Since he already had a competitive time, going out with a heavier fuel load posed unnecessary risks that could lead to mistakes.

Analyzing the data from Piastri’s final Q2 lap against his first Q3 lap, it’s clear how close the competition was. In his initial Q3 attempt, while he was slightly slower at the apex of Turn 2, he regained time with increased speed through Turn 4. However, minor errors impacted his performance, showing that even small mistakes could have significant consequences.

Verstappen’s Dominant First Sector

During his first Q3 lap on scrubbed tires, Verstappen edged out Piastri by just 0.001s, earning provisional pole. He later communicated with his team about the grip issues he experienced in Turn 1. After a reassessment, he was assured the grip would improve once he fully engaged with the new tires on his push lap.

With a lap time of 1m27.304s, Piastri momentarily returned to the top, forcing Verstappen into a position where he had to improve his performance. The data from Verstappen’s new tire lap revealed substantial gains, particularly in the Turns 1-2 section, where he outpaced Piastri due to higher speed on the main straight. His engine’s RPM advantage also contributed to this performance gap.

The competition remained tight throughout the lap, with Piastri demonstrating resilience by recovering ground in several corners. In the closing stages, the power delivery from the Mercedes engine in Piastri’s McLaren began to slightly diminish the gap, illustrating just how close the two drivers were as they crossed the finish line.

As the results solidified, the strategies and slight variances in performance illuminated the intricacies of Formula 1 qualifying. Every decision and calculation—from tire choice to fuel loads—played a crucial role in shaping the outcome of such a finely poised contest.
