Dil Se: From Disappointment to Cult Classic
Though widely regarded today as a cult classic, Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala’s film Dil Se faced considerable challenges during its initial release. The film, expertly directed by Mani Ratnam, encountered a lackluster box office showing, which many attribute to its non-traditional and tragic ending.
In a recent interview, dialogue writer Tigmanshu Dhulia shared his reflections on the film’s early reception. He expressed regret over its performance, noting, “I felt really bad when it didn’t work. Despite the fact that it had such amazing songs, including ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ and ‘Ae Ajnabi’. In fact, my daughter’s name was inspired by a song.” He recounted the emotional connection he had with the film’s music during a moment shared with his newborn daughter.
Dhulia pointed out that the film’s harrowing conclusion may have turned audiences away, stating, “I feel that people didn’t want to see the lead characters die towards the end. I think the climax was disappointing for the audience, as the film had been progressing beautifully up to that point.”
When asked about the possibility of altering the climax to better align with audience expectations, Dhulia praised Mani Ratnam’s artistic integrity. “Mani Ratnam is an artist as a director, and I have learned a lot from him. He trusted his work regardless of whether it was successful or not, and he would never change a shot just for the sake of audience preference.”
Manisha Koirala, who portrayed a conflicted terrorist in the film, previously discussed the film’s ending. In her remarks, she emphasized her appreciation for the chance to explore a darker character, stating, “As an artist, for me, that was a great opportunity to explore the negative side of the character. I had always played lovable roles, but this was different.” She highlighted that, in the original script, the story’s themes extended beyond romantic love.
Koirala revealed, “In the original version, he lets her die, and that was agreeable to all of us, but they changed it last minute.” The final plot made Amar’s desperate actions seem like a grand sacrifice rather than accepting an inevitable tragedy, which Koirala felt diminished the film’s emotional authenticity. “I had liked the original because there was no way they would have become one. Sometimes unrequited love is more interesting than a completed love story.”
Set against the backdrop of insurgency in Assam, Dil Se tells a poignant tale of love intertwined with sacrifice and obsession. Shah Rukh Khan plays Amar, a radio journalist whose infatuation with the enigmatic Meghna (Manisha Koirala) leads him into a storm of personal and ideological conflict. As Amar’s feelings intensify, Meghna’s commitment to her dangerous cause pulls her farther away, creating a painful tension that underscores their relationship. The film’s haunting conclusion, defined by its tragic resonance, encapsulates the depth of their doomed love affair. With an unforgettable soundtrack by A.R. Rahman and Mani Ratnam’s visionary storytelling, Dil Se remains a compelling exploration of love’s complexities amidst a politically tumultuous environment.
