Jennifer Nettles Embraces New Role in Prime Video’s The Bondsman
Jennifer Nettles, a prominent figure in the country music scene and best known as the lead singer of Sugarland, is branching out into acting. Her fans might recognize her from her unique portrayal of Aimee-Leigh in the TV series The Righteous Gemstones. However, her latest venture takes her into the realm of horror-comedy with the new Prime Video series, The Bondsman, which releases all episodes on Thursday, April 3.
A New Chapter as Maryanne Dice
In The Bondsman, Nettles takes on the role of Maryanne Dice, a seasoned nightclub singer striving for recognition in Nashville’s competitive music scene. Her ambitions take a sharp turn when her ex-husband, Hub, played by Kevin Bacon, is killed and subsequently resurrected as a demon-hunter. This bizarre twist inadvertently pulls Maryanne into his perilous new life.
Authenticity in Storytelling
Unlike previous offers she received for similar roles, Nettles found a distinctive authenticity in The Bondsman. “I’ve been approached numerous times with opportunities to participate in projects centered on musicians, but I’ve always declined. Most of them didn’t capture the true essence of the industry, often glamorizing or exaggerating it,” she explained. “This series, however, portrays musicians within the authentic realities of their lives, revealing much deeper layers of their existence.”
She emphasized the focus on the characters’ depth, sharing that viewers gain insight not only into their musical journeys but also into their personal relationships and struggles.
Exploring Relationships Through Music
A significant storyline in The Bondsman is Hub’s estrangement from the music industry, even as Maryanne starts to experience new opportunities alongside their son, Cade (Maxwell Jenkins). Flashbacks reveal the duo’s past as they performed original songs together during happier times.
Interestingly, the original songs featured in the series were co-written by both Nettles and Bacon, with plans to release them as an album following the show’s premiere. “I relished the chance to compose music specifically for these characters and the story. Collaborating with Kevin to produce music reflective of our roles added another layer of richness to the project,” she noted.
