Beyoncé and Solange represent two powerful figures in the entertainment industry, and their bond reflects a deep-rooted connection that has flourished over the years, largely influenced by the upbringing they received from their mother, Tina Knowles.
As young girls, Beyoncé and Solange, aged 12 and 7 respectively, underwent a significant experience when Tina chose to take them to counseling. At the time, this was seen as an unconventional decision, yet Knowles believed it was essential for nurturing their relationship and individual growth.
“My family was not on board, and even Matthew [her ex-husband] was against it, expressing that he didn’t want to be involved,” Knowles recounted in a recent interview with Gayle King.
Despite the objections from her family, Knowles remained committed to what she saw as the best path for her daughters. Recognizing Beyoncé as “a little star in town,” she noticed a shift in the sibling dynamic when Beyoncé joined a singing group as a pre-teen.
“I began to observe a growing separation between them and thought, ‘No, this is not how it should be,'” Knowles expressed to Gayle King. “I was determined to ensure they remained close.”
The family often hosted practice sessions for the singing group at their home, and while Solange was too young to participate, she eagerly wanted to master the dance moves. However, she faced unkind remarks from other group members, and when Knowles saw Beyoncé not standing up for her sister, she made the decision to enroll them both in therapy.
In her journey, Knowles revealed that she had struggled with feelings of being less loved than her brother and was determined to provide a different experience for her daughters. In a 2018 interview with Maria Shriver, she described how she dedicated specific days exclusively to each daughter, particularly as Beyoncé’s career began to take off.
“I set aside days just for them—Wednesdays were designated for Solange,” she mentioned.
Her thoughtful approach appears to have had lasting effects on their relationship.
“I aimed for Beyoncé to understand how Solange felt living a bit in her shadow, and it greatly enhanced her sensitivity and protectiveness,” Knowles shared. “Their bond remains incredibly strong and protective today.”
