Wiley Launches AI Partnerships Initiative at Frankfurt Book Fair

The publishing sector is increasingly confronted with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. In a significant move, Wiley has unveiled its ‘Wiley AI Partnerships,’ a co-innovation initiative aimed at developing tailored AI applications in collaboration with forward-thinking companies. This announcement was made public during the Frankfurt Book Fair, highlighting Wiley’s commitment to enhancing the research process.

The core mission of the Wiley AI Partnerships program is to generate tools and applications that specifically cater to researchers eager to leverage AI for their work. Josh Jarrett, Senior Vice President and General Manager for AI Growth at Wiley, emphasized that there is a growing demand for specialized solutions rather than generic AI applications. He stated, “Researchers and practitioners require relevant applications that enhance and support their research endeavors. This new partnership program is designed to meet these needs by inviting collaboration with start-ups and scale-ups to deliver specialized AI solutions.”

Among the initial collaborations envisioned by Wiley is with Potato, an AI research assistant that harnesses peer-reviewed literature. Through this agreement, Wiley will provide Potato with access to its relevant content, facilitating the development of precisely defined tools that cater to researchers’ preferences. Although specific details regarding the agreement remain undisclosed, Jarrett indicated that each partnership will feature a distinct business model, which might include revenue-sharing arrangements. The overarching goal, he clarified, is to foster a mutually beneficial relationship among Wiley, its partners, and the research community.

Jarrett also mentioned that discussions are underway with other potential partners, with the company focusing its efforts on its key strengths in life sciences, pharmaceuticals, health sciences, food science, engineering, chemistry, materials, and veterinary science.

Wiley has made substantial strides in its commitment to AI, with leaders prioritizing this technological engagement in recent months. This year alone, the company finalised two content-licensing agreements with technology firms, amounting to a combined total of $44 million. CEO Matthew Kissner remarked that Wiley is poised to capitalize on additional AI opportunities as they arise. Jarrett noted that while the trajectory of AI remains uncertain, the partnership initiative provides Wiley with a platform to explore AI’s capabilities and to potentially influence the future landscape of AI in the publishing domain.
