Despite the numerous fatalities that have occurred at The White Lotus, both the series’ audience and its fictional guests continue to find it appealing. As another perilous getaway wraps up, fans are buzzing with speculation about the setting for Season 4 of The White Lotus.
In a sneak peek following the finale on April 6, creator Mike White hinted at a shift in the show’s landscape. “For the fourth season, I want to get a little bit out of the ‘crashing waves against rocks’ vernacular,” he mentioned, suggesting that the next season may deviate from coastal themes. “But there’s always room for more murders at The White Lotus hotels,” he added, keeping the suspense intact.
This has led many to suggest that a ski resort in Norway, or a similarly frigid location, could be the next backdrop for the series.
Winter Wonders
In February, HBO executive Francesca Orsi announced to Deadline that scouting for the Season 4 location would commence shortly. “I can’t really say where we’re going to land but chances are somewhere in Europe,” she shared.
Fans are betting on a chillier European destination. A user on Reddit pointed out that the Norwegian publication Bergens Tidende reported in February that White’s team had applied for a filming incentive in Norway. They were offered an impressive 88 million kroner, approximately $7 million USD, for a project code-named “Secret Garden.”
“As a Norwegian myself, and someone who’s been dreaming of a season set in a luxury mountain ski resort of some kind, I think this sounds beyooond amazing,” the Redditor expressed enthusiastically.
Others chimed in with support, noting that a shift from sunny locales to a snowy setting would be “interesting and a fun change from the sunny prior seasons,” according to one fan. This new environment could enhance themes such as isolation and solitude, and another commenter proposed intriguing scenarios: “Oh, someone is falling off that mountain for sure.”
Exploring Alternatives
However, Kampanje, a Norwegian media outlet, reported that the filming incentive had been denied. Moreover, the absence of a Four Seasons resort in Norway — the type of location where The White Lotus has typically filmed — might also eliminate Norway from consideration. Nonetheless, the interest in filming incentives suggests a genuine consideration of a wintry atmosphere.
On the other hand, Mike White expressed a contrasting potential setting for Season 4: Australia. During a press event in Sydney in 2023, he articulated that it would be his “dream” to have the series showcase every continent. According to Deadline, he remarked, “It would be so fun. Obviously, there’s a huge wealth of talent [in Australia], and the beauty is inarguable, so it feels like it checks all the boxes.”
