Support and Resilience in the Face of Adversity
In a recent statement following a match at Stade Velodrome, manager Still reflected on the stability of his partner, Saunders, who is currently receiving medical care. He expressed gratitude for the supportive environment around her during this challenging time.
“When I returned last Saturday, I knew she was in the best place to receive treatment,” Still remarked, highlighting the support he felt from the medical staff in his absence. “I was unsure whether to attend the game, but she encouraged me to go, saying, ‘you have to go.’”
Still shared that Saunders is currently in a “stable” condition and “doing well,” emphasizing that her health significantly outweighs the importance of any football match. His appreciation extended to his players, who he noted handled the situation with great maturity.
“There are certainly far more pressing matters in life than a football game,” Still stated, reflecting on the broader perspective gained through personal upheaval. He candidly shared the emotional toll of balancing his professional responsibilities while attending to his girlfriend, who had been in a coma. “I had to be with her—we needed to prioritize her care. The team has responded admirably to this crisis.”
When questioned about managing his commitments during such difficult times, Still acknowledged the demands of his role. “It’s my job, and I am well compensated for it. I felt a need to give back, which is why my frustration was palpable last week,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Saunders expressed her thanks to Still for his unwavering support. She remains hopeful about returning to her duties as a Sky Sports presenter in the near future, reflecting on her challenging journey. “I look forward to finishing the 2024-25 season, especially after having to take time off earlier due to thyroid cancer,” she shared on Instagram.
As she focuses on recovery, Saunders has taken a moment to appreciate the solidarity shown by her family, friends, and colleagues. “I am incredibly grateful for the patience of my coworkers at Sky and the extraordinary care I’ve received from our NHS,” she concluded, underscoring the importance of community support during her healing process.
