William Goodge’s Record-Breaking Journey Across Australia

At precisely 6 a.m. AWST on April 15, British endurance athlete William Goodge began his ambitious journey from Cottesloe Beach in Perth, aiming to traverse the Australian continent on foot in a mere 35 days.

This endeavor is no small feat, as it would surpass the existing record set by Chris Turnbull in 2023 by four days. To achieve this remarkable challenge, Goodge must maintain a grueling pace, running approximately 110 kilometers daily. This record attempt is the culmination of a year’s worth of preparation, and Goodge’s determination fuels his every stride.

Purpose Behind the Run

“I’m dedicated to enduring any pain,” asserts Goodge on his website. His motivation extends beyond personal achievement; he is running to support three cancer charities: the American Cancer Society, Cancer Council, and Macmillan Cancer Support. Additionally, he seeks to highlight the struggles faced by cancer patients, reminding everyone that his challenges pale in comparison to what many endure while fighting cancer.

This cause holds special significance for Goodge, as he lost his mother to cancer in 2017. Initially, running served as a means to cope with his grief. Since then, it has transformed into a passion that propelled him to complete a run across the UK in 2019, followed by a cross-country run in the United States two years later.

The central message of his mission, according to his website, is to demonstrate how negative emotions can be channeled into positive action.

Progress and Support

Goodge’s journey can be monitored online, featuring live updates via his InReach device. At the time of reporting, he has covered 533 kilometers out of the total 3867 kilometers needed to complete his record attempt. So far, he has not encountered any significant health or logistical challenges that could jeopardize his goal.

Although the journey is just beginning, Goodge benefits from the support of a committed team. Australian Dean Bartlett is his close aide, while Bartlett’s brother, Mark, has traversed the proposed route for a year, identifying key locations. The effort has garnered substantial media interest, largely due to contributions from Diego Garcia in Los Angeles, who is managing the live-tracking and upcoming YouTube content. Additionally, Goodge’s friend and coach, Jason Brooks, oversees his physical training.

Completing the support crew is William’s father, Graham Goodge, who serves as the driver. Graham expressed hopes for a smooth journey, underscoring the teamwork behind this momentous undertaking.
