Alex Albon Seizes Early Momentum as Williams Races into 2025 Season

Alex Albon is enjoying a strong start to the 2025 Formula 1 season, securing points in four out of five races. The Williams driver acknowledges that his team is leveraging its current performance, particularly knowing that advantages in Formula 1 are often fleeting.

This marks the best beginning for Williams in nearly a decade, with the team sitting in fifth place in the constructors’ standings and amassing 25 points—20 of which have come from Albon himself, who achieved a standout fifth-place finish at the Australian Grand Prix.

“I want to be realistic; I think I’ve always been consistent – if I’m being totally honest and perhaps a bit egotistical about it,” Albon remarked following last weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

He continued, “I’ve always felt that my performances have been steady since joining Williams, and our car has consistently been competitive. Now that we have a reliable car each weekend, it allows me to showcase my abilities more consistently. That’s how it feels to me.”

Despite the encouraging start, Albon is aware that success can be short-lived in the fast-paced world of Formula 1. The Williams team is fighting for every point it can accumulate in these opening stages, particularly as they anticipate focusing their efforts on the significant regulatory changes set to arrive in 2026. As a result, upgrades to the car during the 2025 season are expected to be minimal.

“We must remain realistic,” Albon said. “We have no visibility on other teams’ priorities for next year. Our strong start shifts the expectations for how we want to perform this season, possibly at the expense of next year’s efforts.”

Team principal James Vowles has consistently expressed a commitment to prioritizing preparation for 2026 at the potential cost of this season’s performance. The upcoming regulations will necessitate a comprehensive overhaul, including new power units and intricate aerodynamic changes.

While Albon believes that Williams possesses “one of the strongest midfield cars” on the grid, he acknowledges the uncertainty posed by rival teams who might not be fully focusing on the 2026 regulations.

“We want to make significant progress for next year,” added the Thai-Briton. “Now is the crucial time to accumulate points. With our positive start, we need to be scoring points every weekend. We are unaware of when other midfield teams will introduce upgrades, and that could potentially halt our momentum.”

The tightly packed F1 calendar may also play to Williams’ advantage. With five races already completed in just six weeks and only one weekend off before heading to Miami, the quick succession of races could be beneficial.

Albon described the 2025 calendar as “relentless,” acknowledging the rapid pace of events while suggesting that the lack of upgrades from many rival teams allows Williams to capitalize on its strong performance early in the season. “Since many teams haven’t introduced upgrades yet, we’re able to utilize that advantage,” he noted. “When you start with a competitive car in the first race, you can maintain that for several races—this is why getting off to a good start is so crucial.”
