Leicester City Part Ways with Head Coach Amid Controversy
Kirk was suspended by Leicester City on March 8, 2024, just before the team’s FA Cup quarter-final match against Liverpool. The suspension was enacted to support an internal review that followed a complaint made by an individual outside the club.
During his suspension, Kirk missed three matches and was later dismissed following an investigation into the matter.
Concerns have emerged regarding the dynamics of personal relationships between players and coaches in women’s football, with critics suggesting that such connections may lead to an imbalance of power within teams. While these relationships are not against the law as long as no minors are involved, they can violate established codes of conduct within clubs.
Every Women’s Super League (WSL) team is required to implement its own code of conduct, and it is mandated that each club appoints a safeguarding officer to oversee these protocols.
Kirk acknowledged his awareness of these regulations, stating, “I knew there was a code of conduct; I signed it like everyone else. As the first-team manager, you are meant to lead by example, which is why I accept the decision regarding my sacking.”
He recounted the moment he was confronted about the situation, explaining, “I was called into a meeting just 30 minutes before training, where I was questioned about the matter.” Reflecting on his response, he mentioned, “At times, I’ve considered whether I should have denied it and remained silent, but I doubt that would have been a good choice for me. I chose to be honest about it, and that was that.”
The relationship that led to Kirk’s dismissal began while he was separated from his ex-wife. This coincided with the player experiencing an injury. The two reportedly traveled to Italy together during the February international break, and the club was informed shortly thereafter.
Kirk recognizes that he crossed a line and has expressed a desire to have handled things differently. “By the time of the investigation, we mutually agreed to end the relationship,” he recalled. “We realized we had pushed it too far and decided to take a step back until the season concluded. We thought that if our feelings remained, we could address the situation then.”
Despite being on a permanent contract when he was terminated, Kirk did not receive compensation as the club deemed his actions a case of gross misconduct.
Since his departure, he has attended only two Leicester matches and expressed regret regarding the way he left. “I didn’t have the opportunity to see the staff or the players,” he lamented. “I wanted to apologize to everyone in person, as I believe they felt disappointed in me.”
