Windows 10 Update Disrupts Start Menu Functionality
As Windows 11 gradually takes center stage, Windows 10 is still receiving updates. However, recent developments in the April update may create some frustration for its users.
A new report highlights that the latest update has inadvertently caused dysfunctionality in parts of the Start menu. Specifically, it appears that jump lists—key features that provide quick access to recently opened or pinned files—are malfunctioning for several applications.
Jump lists serve as important shortcuts, allowing users to resume their work seamlessly without navigating through files manually. Unfortunately, for a portion of Windows 10 users, this convenient feature has vanished for some applications following the application of the latest security update, identified as KB5055518.
The glitch seems to correlate with certain PCs rather than affecting the entire user base of Windows 10. Numerous users have taken to online forums to report the missing jump lists. However, those whose Start menus remain functional have managed to avoid the issue, which many are characterizing as a stroke of good luck.
Attempts to find alternative solutions have been met with limited success. The only method that appears effective in restoring the jump lists involves uninstalling the recent update. This solution poses a dilemma for users who prioritize security, as reverting to an earlier state would eliminate access to critical security improvements.
This is not an isolated incident, as previous Windows 10 updates have similarly resulted in problems. Such occurrences underscore a growing perception that Microsoft may be devoting its attention primarily to Windows 11, leading some to wonder about the future of support for Windows 10.
While the exact reasons for the missing jump lists remain unclear, with Microsoft yet to clarify whether this is an intentional change or a technical hiccup, it seems to lean toward being an unintentional issue.
Despite the hurdles, many hope that Microsoft will continue to support Windows 10 users and address these emerging problems proactively.
