With CBS’s Love for Spinoffs, It’s Time for a Blue Bloods Prequel

CBS has already secured at least five spinoffs for the 2026-2027 season, leading to speculation about a possible prequel for the beloved series, Blue Bloods.

While some might associate this potential prequel with the concept of “Boston Blue,” there’s ample opportunity to expand the Blue Bloods franchise even further.

A prequel could serve as a fitting way to ease the disappointment of the original series’ conclusion. Although CBS’s decision to end Blue Bloods left many fans frustrated, a prequel that retains the spirit of the original might help mend some of that dissatisfaction.

Fire Country Gets Two Spinoffs, So Why Should Blue Bloods Get Only One?

Currently, Boston Blue stands as the sole spinoff connected to Blue Bloods on CBS’s programming schedule.

In contrast, Fire Country boasts not one, but two spinoffs: Sheriff Country and Fire Country: Surfside.

While Fire Country has its merits, my Friday nights have long been dedicated to the compelling storytelling of Blue Bloods, and the premise of Boston Blue doesn’t quite resonate with me.

This upcoming series will focus on Danny Reagan, yet curiously, it hasn’t highlighted the rest of the Reagan family. Instead, it seems we will see a new police family dynamic, with Danny teaming up with a partner from another esteemed law enforcement family in Boston.

This shift away from the Reagans may diminish the continuity and emotional connection fans have developed with the original family. Although I anticipate growing fond of this new team, an infusion of more Reagan family elements would be appreciated.

A Blue Bloods Prequel Would Be A Brilliant Way To Continue The Series’ Legacy

Regrettably, it seems Blue Bloods may not return to the small screen.

Despite its substantial ratings and the outcry from devoted fans—including those boycotting CBS to express their anger—the series was deemed too costly, and ultimately, that factor outweighed viewer loyalty.

A prequel, however, represents a promising alternative.

Unlike Boston Blue, which suggests a change of scenery, a Blue Bloods prequel could retain its New York City roots, honoring the NYPD much like its predecessor.

Additionally, it could uphold the deeply ingrained family values that defined the series without encountering the financial challenges that led to the original’s demise.

Setting the prequel in the late 1980s or early 1990s—during the time when Frank’s children were young and Henry served as police commissioner—would create a narrative rich with potential family and police drama while focusing on Frank and Henry.

In this scenario, Frank could be portrayed in a stage of life paralleling Danny’s journey in the original series: facing challenges as a dedicated cop while balancing family obligations on a modest salary. Meanwhile, Henry would navigate the political intricacies of his role as police commissioner, all while prioritizing the welfare of his officers.

A Prequel Series Would Give Us Greater Insight Into Henry And Frank

Henry was always one of the standout characters on Blue Bloods, though his screen time diminished over the years.

Often, he served a supportive role or provided reflections on the evolving nature of policing, with his character more incorporated into family dynamics during dinner scenes than through significant personal arcs.

Exploring a younger Henry would unveil new dimensions to his character. This version of Henry might lead his department and household with a unique perspective that contrasts with his later, wiser self, creating a compelling narrative journey.

A prequel could delve into Henry’s transformation into the character that fans recognize. Furthermore, it would allow the Reagan children’s stories to blossom, showcasing Erin’s assertiveness in sibling dynamics and providing insight into how Frank and his wife raised their children.

Moreover, this could be an opportunity to introduce Joe Reagan, who has remained a figure shrouded in mystery throughout the 14 seasons. Knowing his backstory as a charming young boy, whose ultimate sacrifice was driven by a commitment to combat police corruption, would add significant emotional weight to the narrative.

Could A Blue Bloods Prequel Include The Original Cast?

It would be exciting to see younger actors take on roles from the original Blue Bloods cast, although this may not be feasible due to practical considerations.

While Donnie Wahlberg is expected to reprise his role as Danny in Boston Blue, finding a younger actor to portray Frank poses challenges. Will Estes, who has often been likened to Frank due to Jamie’s character, could be a fitting choice for a younger version.

However, financial constraints that contributed to Blue Bloods’ cancellation may prevent this from being a reality. Thus, casting new actors for Frank and Henry might be necessary. Nonetheless, there is a potential avenue for the original cast to remain involved.

A voiceover narrative from Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan could bridge the prequel to the original series, with Frank reminiscing about his past and sharing stories with his grandchildren, perhaps in a manner reminiscent of How I Met Your Mother.

Alternatively, Jamie, particularly with his upcoming fatherhood storyline, could narrate reflections about his upbringing and family dynamics, enriching the storytelling experience.

There Are Clearly A Million Ideas For A Blue Blood Prequel, But What Do You Think?

The concept of a Blue Bloods prequel is brimming with possibilities.

What do you think, fans of Blue Bloods? Would a prequel fill the void left by the show’s cancellation?

We welcome your thoughts in the comments.
