Mercedes’ Toto Wolff Anticipates Strong Rookie Season for Andrea Kimi Antonelli
Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes in Formula 1, has expressed optimism regarding Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s performance during his debut season. He believes that Antonelli will be able to match the pace of his teammate George Russell. However, Wolff emphasized that the primary objective for the young Italian is to become acclimated to the sport ahead of the significant regulation changes expected in 2026.
Antonelli’s ascent within the Mercedes ranks comes as a strategic response to Lewis Hamilton’s unexpected decision to depart for Ferrari this season. Having been nurtured through the Mercedes junior program, Antonelli has been viewed as a long-term successor for Hamilton. His promotion is a milestone in a carefully crafted seven-year development plan.
At just 18 years old, Antonelli’s potential is highly regarded by Wolff, who is confident that the rookie will be competitive alongside the more seasoned Russell. “From the moment we chose Kimi, it was evident that we were opting for a young talent who has consistently displayed exceptional ability in the junior categories,” Wolff remarked during an event in Melbourne marking the kickoff of the racing season.
Wolff further outlined the importance of this year for Antonelli, stating, “For Kimi, this season is about learning and adapting to the tracks, preparing for significant developments ahead next year. It will involve both achievements and challenges along the way.”
Wolff acknowledged the balance of youth and experience within the team, noting, “I told George: ‘We don’t expect you to always dominate Kimi.’ If we thought that would be the case, we wouldn’t have brought Kimi on board. In terms of raw speed, Kimi will be competitive with George, but he will also need to navigate the complexities of tire management and the steep learning curve that comes with the sport.”
The team principal also emphasized the dynamic between Russell, who is 27, and Antonelli, suggesting that this duo could result in strong mutual growth as they push each other throughout the season.
Moreover, Wolff dismissed any speculation regarding a potential pursuit of Max Verstappen, reinforcing his commitment to nurturing the current driver lineup of Russell and Antonelli. “We need to focus on our own drivers and ensure we maximize the talent we have. There’s no need to look elsewhere when we have a strong relationship within the team,” he stated, confirming that such moves are not being considered at this time.
