Toto Wolff Opens Up About Lewis Hamilton’s Move to Ferrari

Toto Wolff has expressed that he did not attempt to convince Lewis Hamilton to stay with Mercedes instead of making the switch to Ferrari, indicating a level of concern over the Formula 1 driver’s longevity in the sport.

Earlier this year, Hamilton communicated to Wolff his desire to terminate his contract with Mercedes ahead of schedule to join Ferrari for the 2025 season. This announcement sent ripples throughout the F1 community, as Wolff acknowledged that he had speculated Hamilton might be contemplating a departure after a phone call with Carlos Sainz’s father, who mentioned that Hamilton would replace Sainz at Ferrari.

Mutual Respect Amid Changes

Despite the change, the relationship between Hamilton and Wolff has been characterized by mutual respect and friendship. Wolff noted that Hamilton’s decision to leave may actually simplify matters for Mercedes, as it spares them the difficult conversation of informing one of the sport’s most legendary drivers that his time with the team has come to an end.

Drawing parallels with prominent figures in football, Wolff referenced Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola, who have both addressed the need to transition to younger talent while moving older players along during their reconstructive phases.

These insights were shared in Wolff’s new book, Inside Mercedes F1: Life in the Fast Lane.

Understanding the Transition

“I had anticipated that Lewis might leave,” Wolff stated. “However, I struggled to comprehend why he would switch teams before it was clear whether we would maintain our competitiveness.”

He expressed the urgency of the situation, noting that Hamilton’s decision forced him to quickly reach out to partners and potentially miss negotiation opportunities with other drivers who had already signed contracts, such as Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris.

“Nonetheless, I appreciate the circumstances. It alleviates the need for a discussion where we would have to inform the sport’s most celebrated driver that we no longer require his services,” he added.

Mercedes plans to fill Hamilton’s position with 18-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a move Wolff believes aligns with the team’s future orientation.

Shelf Life in Competitive Sports

Wolff further elaborated, highlighting the importance of cognitive sharpness in a sport where performance is paramount. He explained, “Everyone has a shelf life, which is why we opted for a one-plus-one-year deal with Hamilton in 2023.”

The transition not only reflects the team’s forward-thinking strategy but also parallels actions taken by football managers who have historically embraced new talent to sustain competitiveness.

Reflecting on 2021 Championship Controversy

Amidst these changes, Wolff also reflected on the controversial conclusion of the 2021 season, where Hamilton narrowly lost the championship to Max Verstappen during the chaotic Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a situation compounded by the then-FIA race director Michael Masi’s decisions.

During an interview on the High Performance podcast related to his book, Wolff shared his ongoing reflections about that fateful race: “Each week, I find myself thinking about Abu Dhabi. It troubles me because Lewis deserved to be recognized as the greatest of all time with eight world titles.”

He acknowledged the merits of both drivers that season, affirming that both Hamilton and Verstappen showcased their talents as deserving champions. However, he still maintains that the circumstances leading to the championship’s conclusion were unjust.

“While both were worthy champions, the events of that particular day in Abu Dhabi were unfair,” he concluded.
