Manslaughter Charges Filed in Security Guard’s Death in Calgary
A 45-year-old woman has been charged with manslaughter following the tragic death of a security guard at a downtown Calgary building earlier this month.
According to the Calgary police, officers responded to an emergency call at the building located in the 900 block of Seventh Avenue Southwest around 8 a.m. on March 13. Upon arrival, they found the security guard exhibiting signs of medical distress.
The guard was promptly transported to a local hospital; however, he succumbed to his injuries the next day.
Investigation Unfolds
Authorities stated that a review of CCTV footage revealed that the woman entered the premises with the intent to steal packages left in the lobby. When the security guard intervened to recover the packages and requested her to leave, she reportedly pushed him, resulting in a fall that led to his head injury.
Following the incident, the woman allegedly stole a laptop and other items from an office before exiting the building.
A photo of the suspect from the surveillance footage was disseminated among law enforcement, leading to the swift arrest of Amanda Robyn Ahenakew. She faces a charge of manslaughter and is scheduled to appear in court on April 16.
The deceased has been identified as 73-year-old George Fernandez, a resident of Calgary, whose untimely death has raised concerns regarding safety and security within public buildings.
