In recent Women’s Nations League action, Scotland and Wales faced disappointing defeats, while the Republic of Ireland celebrated a resounding victory against Greece. Northern Ireland, on the other hand, had to settle for a draw against Romania, thereby missing out on consecutive wins in the tournament.

Scotland Struggles Continue with Heavy Loss to Germany

Scotland’s journey in the Women’s Nations League Group A1 took a turn for the worse with a 4-0 loss at home to Germany. The match held in Dundee began in disastrous fashion for the Scots, as Germany’s Elisa Senss scored just seconds after the kickoff, setting an ominous tone for the game.

Things went from bad to worse for Scotland when an own goal from Sophie Howard put Germany up 2-0 before halftime. Shortly after the break, Cora Zicai and Lea Schuller added two more goals within three minutes, sealing a comprehensive victory for the visitors and leaving Scotland at the bottom of the group standings. With three consecutive defeats, Scotland’s situation appears dire, particularly as Germany aims to maintain its lead over the Netherlands at the top of the rankings.

Wales Faces Setback Against Denmark; Injury Concerns for Holland

Wales endured a 2-1 defeat to Denmark in Cardiff, with the injury to the goalscorer Ceri Holland raising significant concerns ahead of the summer’s European Championship. Despite being ranked 12th in the world, Denmark took an early lead with a goal from Signe Bruun just seven minutes into the match. Holland equalized before halftime, injecting hope into the Welsh side.

A missed opportunity arose in the 70th minute when Hannah Cain failed to capitalize on a one-on-one chance against Denmark’s goalkeeper, Maja Bay Ostergaard. Shortly after, Denmark’s substitute Amelie Vangsgaard scored the winning goal, marking manager Rhian Wilkinson’s first home defeat in seven matches since she took the reins a year ago. Following the game, the injury to Holland—who was seen leaving the pitch on a stretcher after a vigorous challenge—cast a shadow over the team’s preparations for the Euros.

Republic of Ireland Shines in Victory Over Greece

In contrast, the Republic of Ireland showcased a strong performance, defeating Greece 4-0 in Crete during the first of two encounters. After a frustrating first half, the Irish team found their rhythm following halftime adjustments made by coach Carla Ward. Substitute Marissa Sheva opened the scoring shortly after the break, benefitting from a change in momentum.

Kyra Carusa followed up with another goal, taking advantage of a rebound from a saved shot. Jessie Stapleton extended the lead with a header from a corner kick, while Amber Barrett capped off the scoring in stoppage time, marking her 50th cap in style. The Irish will aim to replicate this success in the upcoming rematch against Greece on Tuesday at Tallaght Stadium.

Northern Ireland Shares Points with Romania

Northern Ireland’s aspirations for back-to-back victories in the Women’s Nations League were thwarted as they settled for a 1-1 draw against Romania in Group B1. After a thrilling 3-2 win over Bosnia earlier in the year, Northern Ireland grabbed the lead through Danielle Maxwell’s goal in the 33rd minute.

However, a defensive error allowed Romania to equalize shortly after, with Mihaela Ciolacu scoring to earn the home team their first points of the league. This draw keeps Northern Ireland in second place in their group, while they now prepare for a rematch against Romania in Belfast on Tuesday.
