World Premiere of My Best Friend’s Wedding Musical at Ogunquit Playhouse

The Ogunquit Playhouse is set to unveil the world premiere of the new musical adaptation of My Best Friend’s Wedding. This production is a creative collaboration with a book by Ron Bass and Jonathan Harvey, inspired by the beloved 1997 film from TriStar Pictures, which was also penned by Bass. The musical will delight audiences with the timeless songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

Directed and choreographed by the esteemed Kathleen Marshall, a three-time Tony Award winner, the musical is scheduled to run until October 27. Marshall’s direction aims to capture the humor and emotional complexity of the original film while bringing a fresh vibrancy to the stage.

The cast of My Best Friend’s Wedding boasts an impressive lineup, featuring Krystal Joy Brown in the role of Julianne. She is joined by Matt Doyle, a Tony Award winner, portraying Michael, and Lianah Sta. Ana as Kimmy. Other noteworthy performances include Morgan Bryant as Samantha, Zoe Jensen as Amanda, Telly Leung as George, Mark Lotito as Walter, Austin Phillips as Scotty, and Soara-Joye Ross as Isabelle.

Musical direction for the show is provided by Andrew Sotomayor, while the creative visuals come to life with scenic and costume designs by Colin Richmond, lighting designed by Richard Latta, sound by Kevin Heard, and wig and makeup designs by Roxanne De Luna. Nikki Lint oversees the production stage management, with casting conducted by ARC, led by Mark Brandon and Jarrett Reiche.

The narrative revolves around Julianne Potter, a fiery food critic who has always viewed romance with skepticism. This cynicism leads her to end her relationship with her high school sweetheart, Michael O’Neal. However, when she learns that he is about to marry the picture-perfect Kimmy, Julianne’s perspective shifts. Determined to reclaim her romance, she embarks on a quest that challenges the limits of friendship and love. The question remains: can Julianne sabotage the wedding to win back Michael?

This musical adaptation captures the essence of the film filled with sharp wit and irony, enhanced by a soundtrack featuring iconic hits such as “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Walk on By,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” and “What’s New Pussycat?” The star power of Broadway talents like Krystal Joy Brown (known for Hamilton), Matt Doyle, Lianah Sta. Ana (from Miss Saigon), and Telly Leung (from Disney’s Aladdin) promises an engaging performance that resonates with both fans of the original film and a new audience.
