The annual Florida Python Challenge 2024 is currently underway, running from August 9 to August 18. Participants from various regions are competing to remove as many Burmese pythons as possible from designated areas, including the Florida Everglades.
Initially a spontaneous initiative in the Everglades aimed at controlling python populations, this event has transformed over the years into a notable competition that garners attention from various media, including reality television, and attracts participants including notable figures such as musicians and celebrity chefs.
“The Python Challenge has developed a strong following,” stated Marshall Jones, whose family operates Mack’s Fish Camp in western Broward County. “Participants travel great distances, often camping out, just to hunt these elusive creatures.”
Conservation Purpose Behind the Hunt
Burmese pythons are classified as an invasive species that significantly threaten the native wildlife within the Everglades ecosystem. To mitigate this threat, Florida employs hunters to capture these snakes each year. The challenge not only promotes biodiversity but also offers potential financial rewards, with the top hunters in 2024 vying for prizes up to $25,000.
During last year’s competition, participants successfully captured 209 snakes, with a top prize of $10,000 awarded for the greatest number of pythons caught.
Participants may register until the competition concludes on August 18. More registration details are available at FLPythonChallenge.org.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) organizes this challenge annually, which lasts for ten days and offers cash prizes for those who capture and kill the most Burmese pythons. This year’s event is taking place from August 9 to 18.
During the 2013 Python Challenge, competitors Jim Turner and Dusty Crum encountered and managed two Burmese pythons they found along a canal bank, an experience captured on video by their teammate Bill Booth.
Overview of the Florida Python Challenge
The Florida Python Challenge is a competition focused on removing invasive pythons, occurring every August. Contestants have nine days to catch as many Burmese pythons as they can. The 2024 event commenced at 12:01 a.m. on August 9 and concludes at 5 p.m. on August 18, strengthening efforts to safeguard the Everglades’ native ecosystem.
Firearm Regulations in the Challenge
In the Florida Python Challenge, participants are prohibited from using firearms due to the absence of a designated firearm season within the competition’s timeframe. Hunters, particularly novices, are required to humanely dispatch captured pythons immediately after capture. However, air guns and captive bolts may be used at any time during the event.
