Widespread Outages Plague X as Cyberattack is Suspected
The X social media platform has experienced significant instability this morning, with numerous outages interrupting service across both mobile applications and desktop versions. The disruptions began around 5:40 AM ET, leading to widespread reports of users unable to refresh their timelines, resulting in frustrating loading loops.
Elon Musk Responds:
In light of the disruptions, Elon Musk has indicated that a substantial cyberattack is taking place against X. He noted, “There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against 𝕏,” suggesting that this issue is not merely routine service difficulties. Musk elaborated that the scale of the attack suggests the involvement of a well-organized group or potentially even state resources.
During an interview with Fox Business, he acknowledged the challenge of pinpointing the exact nature of the attack, stating, “We’re not sure exactly what happened. But there was a massive cyberattack to try and bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area.”
Users accessing X via the web have encountered error messages instructing them to refresh the page, with notifications stating, “Something went wrong. Try reloading.” Additionally, some have experienced Cloudflare error messages indicating a Host Error when attempting to connect to X.com.
The impact of the loading issues appears to be felt globally, with users reporting difficulties from various locations. These outages have been corroborated by observations on other social media platforms, where users have shared their experiences. The downtime has typically lasted several minutes, intermittently disrupting the ability to refresh feeds.
Updates, March 10th: Further information has been added based on comments from Elon Musk shared via a tweet and the recent interview with Fox Business.
