Becerra Joins Race for California Governor Amidst Growing Field

Former Health Secretary under President Biden, Xavier Becerra, officially entered the race for California governor on Wednesday, joining an already crowded field of candidates. This political contest could see significant shifts if former Vice President Kamala Harris decides to run.

Becerra brings a wealth of experience in public service to his campaign, having previously served as California’s Attorney General, a U.S. Representative, and a state legislator. In December 2020, Becerra was appointed by President-elect Joe Biden to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, leveraging his advocacy for the Affordable Care Act during the critical pandemic response.

As California grapples with escalating housing costs, high grocery prices, and skyrocketing gas rates, Becerra has articulated that many working families are struggling with affordability. He emphasized, “The California Dream is slipping away,” during his campaign announcement.

The race to succeed California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is term-limited, has already attracted a diverse group of contenders, including prominent Democrats. If Harris chooses to enter the fray, the dynamics of the race could change considerably. Since departing from Washington in January following a failed presidential campaign, Harris has not ruled out a gubernatorial bid.

Given that Democrats outnumber Republicans by nearly two-to-one in California, the seat is widely considered secure for the party, especially since Republicans have not won a statewide election in about 20 years.

In his announcement, Becerra refrained from naming his Democratic opponents, which include former U.S. House member Katie Porter, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, among others.

On the Republican side, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco was the first major candidate to announce his intention to run in February, attributing the state’s ongoing challenges with homelessness and high housing costs to Democratic leadership.

Becerra has promoted a message of resilience, stating he is prepared to “take on bullies who get in our way,” likely a nod to former President Donald Trump. During his tenure as California Attorney General, Becerra was known for actively challenging the Trump administration on numerous fronts, including health care and environmental regulations.

Despite having led the Health and Human Services Department through the pandemic, Becerra’s administration faced criticism due to California’s long lockdowns, which some argue hindered educational progress and economic recovery, potentially making him a target in the election.

Becerra often shares his personal background as motivation, reflecting on his working-class upbringing. His mother emigrated from Jalisco, Mexico, and his father is a California native who grew up in Mexico.

“My parents came to California with $12 in their pockets. They built a life they were proud of,” he recalled. “That’s the promise of California, and I will fight to ensure it’s still within reach for everyone.”
