Xavier Worthy Not Facing Charges After Arrest

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy will not be facing charges following his arrest on Friday, according to a statement from the Williamson County District Attorney reported by the Austin American-Statesman. Worthy was taken into custody in Texas for an alleged assault, with official records indicating it involved a family or household member and included an accusation of restricted breathing. In Texas, such an allegation carries the potential for a third-degree felony charge, which could result in a prison sentence of up to ten years.

However, Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick clarified that after consultation with several witnesses, authorities have opted not to proceed with charges against Worthy. Dick emphasized that further investigation is ongoing, stating, “Mr. Worthy and his attorneys are fully cooperating with this investigation.” He also indicated that the case could be revisited should new evidence emerge suggesting probable cause.

Following the news of his arrest, Worthy’s attorneys, Chip Lewis and Sam Bassett, released a statement asserting their client’s innocence. They conveyed their commitment to working with local law enforcement to clarify the circumstances surrounding the allegations. They claimed that the complainant refused to leave Worthy’s residence despite numerous requests, which they argue is a significant aspect of the situation.

The statement from Worthy’s legal team accused the alleged victim of attempting to extort their client, labeling the allegations as “baseless.” They claimed that the complainant was requested multiple times to vacate the property due to infidelity issues, which they allege have been substantiated by video evidence from a private investigator. Additionally, they mentioned that damages to Worthy’s property and personal harm had been inflicted upon him, with the receiver reportedly expressing that he did not wish to press charges.

As of the last report, Worthy was still held at a Williamson County jail, pending his release, which was expected to take some hours. The young receiver had just completed his rookie NFL season, achieving 638 receiving yards, along with six touchdowns, and had also scored three rushing touchdowns in the past year. Notably, he had a standout performance during the Super Bowl, scoring two touchdowns in the Chiefs’ 40-22 defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Background on Xavier Worthy

The 21-year-old Worthy made headlines not only for his talent on the field but also for his remarkable speed, having set a record for the NFL Scouting Combine with a 4.21-second 40-yard dash prior to being drafted in the first round last year.

As this situation continues to unfold, Worthy’s case emphasizes the complexities and public scrutiny faced by professional athletes, particularly when legal matters arise. As investigations proceed, further developments may shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
