Xbox Introduces In-App Purchases with Key Changes to Remote Play Functionality
Microsoft’s Xbox is set to enhance its mobile app by allowing users to buy games and downloadable content (DLC) directly through their phones, along with the option to subscribe to Game Pass. However, this rollout comes with a significant drawback: remote play will no longer be integrated within the Xbox app.
The new update is currently being tested by beta users on both iOS and Android platforms, with an expanded launch expected for all users in the near future.
The announcement from Xbox president Sarah Bond reflects a long-awaited shift, first hinted at in October when plans were shared to enable in-app purchases. This discussion coincided with a notable court ruling regarding Google and third-party app store accessibility on Android devices. Despite initial hopes for immediate implementation, the feature was delayed, attributed to a “temporary administrative stay” that affected its launch timeline.
Once the in-app purchasing feature becomes widely available, users will see a “Buy” button next to games that they wish to purchase, given they have saved payment information. The update will also permit preorders that can be preinstalled on an Xbox console, along with the ability to redeem perks for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. This marks a significant shift from the app’s prior functionality, where users could buy games while still utilizing remote play features.
While the ability to access remote play through the mobile app is being removed, Microsoft states that players can still use browser capabilities to engage in remote play. Additionally, the company is expanding access to remote play on compatible devices, including select Samsung televisions, Amazon Fire TV models, and Meta Quest virtual reality headsets.
Alongside these changes, several other updates are being introduced. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will soon enjoy the option to stream select games they’ve purchased directly from their Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, eliminating the need to first download the titles locally. New games have also been added to the “stream your own game” lineup, including titles like Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Subnautica 2.
Furthermore, Xbox is introducing a fresh game hub feature that consolidates various data pertaining to games. This includes player statistics, achievements, information about friends currently engaging with the game, in-game events, and available additional content.
As Xbox continues to refine its mobile experience, this blend of new purchasing options and remote play adaptations reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to enhancing user accessibility and engagement within the gaming community.
