Yanic Truesdale Talks New Role in Étoile

Yanic Truesdale, known for his role as Michel Gerard in Gilmore Girls, is set to take on a new character, Raphael, in the upcoming eight-episode ballet dramedy Étoile. This series, crafted by the creators of Gilmore Girls, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on April 24. Truesdale’s new character, a number-crunching Parisian, is not only passionate about ballet but is also committed to preserving its legacy.

Truesdale discussed his experience reconnecting with the Palladinos and the familiar atmosphere on set, reminiscent of their previous collaborations. In an interview, he shared his thoughts on this reunion.

Finding His Place in Étoile

When did you first hear about Étoile? And when did you find out you were going to be a part of it?

Yanic Truesdale: Amy initially reached out via email, hinting that there might be a role for me in the series. It was exciting but not yet formal. Then, while I was traveling in Croatia, Amy called to offer me a role if I was interested. It was thrilling, as I’ve always admired their writing, and dance has played a significant part in my life. This felt like a full circle moment for me.

Revisiting the Sherman-Palladino Universe

What does it feel like to return to the Sherman-Palladino TV world after nearly a decade since Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life?

It feels amazing to come back. The familiarity is comforting. We’ve known each other for such a long time—it’s been 25 years since Gilmore Girls first aired. Both my career and theirs have evolved significantly, and now we’re all more comfortable in our own identities. Our communication is almost non-verbal; we understand each other deeply, which is a beautiful aspect of our collaboration.

Introducing Raphael

How is Raphael introduced to the audience, especially in the nightclub scene?

It’s interesting. I actually asked Amy if I could have a drink in the scene, and she agreed. [Laughs] Raphael is the deputy director at the Paris Opera; he is deeply committed to his job and to maintaining the institution. He devotes himself to his work, sacrificing much of his personal life in the process.

His Dynamics with Geneviève

How would you characterize Raphael’s relationship with Geneviève?

Unlike Michel’s dynamic with Lorelai, which had a sibling-like tension, Raphael’s relationship with Geneviève is founded on admiration. While he respects her navigation through the complexities of ballet, he plays a more supportive role in her endeavors. He is dedicated to her vision, even if he harbors ambitions of his own.

Raphael’s Role in the Ballet World

What is Raphael’s function within the ballet organization?

As the deputy director, Raphael oversees finances, ensuring the institution remains financially viable. Although he doesn’t have primary artistic control, his involvement in discussions signifies the importance of maintaining operational stability. His role is crucial for the survival of the ballet’s creative pursuits.

Personality Traits

Would you say Raphael has a snarky side similar to Michel’s?

Perhaps! It’s likely a part of my performance if you dress me in a suit and give me some authority. [Laughs]

The Meeting of Two Characters

If Michel and Raphael were to meet, do you think they would hit it off?

I believe they would. Michel often struggled with feelings of incompetence in others, whereas Raphael is knowledgeable and skilled in his role. I think Michel would respect that and find common ground with him.

Reuniting with Former Cast Members

You are not alone in having ties to Gilmore Girls in this series—what can you say about Kelly Bishop’s involvement?

It’s wonderful to have Kelly Bishop on board. Interestingly, she had never visited Paris before filming, so I took her out one evening, and it was magical. We spent hours immersed in the city’s charm. [Laughs]

Sharing the Screen

Did you get to share any scenes with Kelly, or see her in action during filming?

No, unfortunately, our filming schedules didn’t overlap. However, during table reads, I could easily hear her distinct voice in the parts she played.

Introducing Ballet to New Audiences

What would you like to say to fans who might be unfamiliar with the ballet world?

This show serves as an excellent introduction to the ballet landscape. For those already passionate about dance, it offers vibrant and exciting performances. Ballet does not have to feel exclusive; the series aims to present dance in a way that’s modern and relatable, which is something I’m thrilled about.
