The life sentence of Yolanda Saldívar, the woman convicted for the murder of beloved singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez, remains in effect following a decision by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles to deny her parole request on Thursday.
Saldívar, who once presided over Selena’s fan club, was sentenced to life imprisonment for fatally shooting the prominent American singer on March 31, 1995. The board based their decision on the nature of the crime, citing the brutality of the offense and indicating that Saldívar’s history reflects a serious threat to public safety.
At 64 years old, Saldívar is currently incarcerated at the Patrick L. O’Daniel Unit in Gatesville, Texas. The incident occurred in a hotel room in Corpus Christi when Saldívar was confronted regarding her misappropriation of funds from the fan club and Selena’s clothing stores.
In the wake of the parole decision, Selena’s family and her husband, Chris Pérez, issued a statement on social media. They expressed gratitude for the board’s ruling, affirming that while they can never recover the loss of Selena, this decision brings a sense of justice for her life, which ended prematurely.
The parole board has set Saldívar’s next review for March 2030. Notably, March 31, 2025, will mark 30 years since Selena’s tragic death.
Concluding their statement, Selena’s family emphasized the importance of remembering her life rather than the circumstances surrounding her death, encouraging fans to celebrate her legacy.
Selena’s impact and memory continue to resonate. Following her untimely passing, her story has been memorialized through various documentaries and a feature film starring Jennifer Lopez. Additionally, Texas boasts numerous murals, statues, and countless tributes dedicated to the legendary artist.
