The Google News application has established itself as a primary tool for users seeking quick updates on a range of topics. Despite its widespread use, the app is not without its shortcomings. Many users, including Android Authority’s Andy Walker, have expressed concerns regarding its tendency to display content behind paywalls and to include irrelevant topics and websites.

Earlier this month, Andy highlighted four notable alternatives to Google News, sparking curiosity about how readers prefer to receive news on their smartphones. To gather insights, a poll was included in the article, prompting readers to share their preferences.

How do you get your news fix on your phone?

Results from the poll revealed that a striking ~78% of respondents from Android Authority favor Google News as their smartphone news source. Interestingly, a large portion of traffic that led to this article was sourced from Google News itself, with several readers noting this observation. A few commenters elaborated on their loyalty to Google News.

One reader, missmotta, commented on their journey toward making Google News their primary news app: “It took me several years to do so, but I’ve finally honed Google News into my favorite go-to news app. It’s got everything I need. I don’t know if I could live without it.” This sentiment reflects a deeper connection many users have developed with the platform over time.

Despite the dominance of Google News, users also highlighted several alternatives worth considering. Among these are Ground News, Protopage, Flipboard, CRAYON, PressReader, and Arc Browser, indicating a diverse market of news consumption options.

The poll further indicated that 7.58% of participants utilize a dedicated news reader app, while 4.15% prefer using an RSS reader. The remainder of the options selected garnered less than 3% each, suggesting that while alternatives are acknowledged, Google News remains a favored choice for the majority.
