The Florida Highway Patrol’s homicide unit is actively probing a tragic accident that resulted in the death of a young man on Interstate 75 in Lee County on the afternoon of April 18.
A 24-year-old man from Lehigh Acres lost his life in this incident, having been ejected from his vehicle during the collision, which involved another car. Two men from North Fort Myers—a 21-year-old driver and a 23-year-old passenger—sustained minor injuries.
According to FHP, the crash occurred around 1:46 p.m. near mile marker 131 at Daniels Parkway, as both vehicles were traveling north at a “high rate of speed” in the left lane.
The first vehicle, a 2023 Hyundai Sonata, was driven by the 21-year-old from North Fort Myers, situated ahead of a 2012 Nissan Maxima operated by the deceased Lehigh Acres man.
As both drivers navigated around slower traffic, they shifted into the center lane. The Hyundai moved to the outer lane to bypass the congestion while the Nissan attempted to pass on the left side.
After surpassing the slower-moving vehicles, both drivers attempted to return to the center lane, resulting in a collision.
The left front of the Hyundai struck the right front of the Nissan, leading both vehicles to veer across the outside lane towards the shoulder. The Nissan subsequently crashed into a concrete barrier while continuing its trajectory north. In this chaotic moment, both vehicles drifted left, and the Nissan overturned, resulting in the driver being thrown from the car and subsequently struck by the Hyundai.
The Hyundai, carrying the two North Fort Myers men, came to rest in the center lane facing northwest, while the Nissan remained upright in the inside lane and shoulder.
Emergency Medical Services pronounced the Lehigh Acres man deceased at the accident scene.
The Troubling Reality of Southwest Florida Roads
This incident contributes to a worrying trend regarding road safety in the region. To date, there have been 37 fatalities in Lee County wrecks during 2025, with an additional 9 deaths reported in Collier County.
The combined total for 2024 saw 196 fatalities across these two counties, underscoring the pressing need for improved road safety measures and awareness initiatives.
