Johann Zarco Aims for Podium at MotoGP Argentina Grand Prix
LCR Honda rider Johann Zarco is eyeing a potential podium finish at the upcoming MotoGP Argentina Grand Prix, following a promising performance during practice sessions. The results from Friday’s activities at the Termas de Río Hondo circuit suggest a revival for the Japanese manufacturer in the competitive racing arena.
At 34, Zarco has demonstrated remarkable consistency, advancing directly to Q2, mirroring his accomplishment at the season-opening event in Thailand. While this may seem modest, for Honda, this level of performance indicates significant progress compared to the previous season.
Having qualified 12th and finishing 7th in Thailand, Zarco expressed optimism about his prospects as he gears up for the weekend. “I have a good feeling that I can do a very strong qualifying,” Zarco commented. “That would enhance our chances for a podium in both the sprint and the race on Sunday. A solid qualifying session will be crucial.”
When questioned about the early season possibility of podiums, he admitted, “So soon? Yes. If it happens here, let’s embrace it! It would validate the positive vibes from the race in Thailand.”
He continued, “Our analysis of the race in Thailand has been largely optimistic. Securing a strong qualifying position would allow me the opportunity similar to what Aprilia rookie Ai Ogura experienced in Thailand, which could lead to a top-five finish.”
Reflecting on a Productive Friday
Having previously won at this track in the Moto2 category, Zarco reflected positively on Friday despite encountering a crash during practice. He led much of FP1 and concluded the session in close proximity to Ducati’s star rider, Marc Márquez. “It was thrilling to lead FP1, and finishing near Marc was encouraging,” Zarco said.
“During the afternoon session, I didn’t improve as much as I hoped, but it was enough to make it to Q2. Achieving another Q2 is a solid confirmation of our development.”
Ducati’s two-time world champion, Francesco Bagnaia, acknowledged Zarco’s accomplishments aboard the Honda as “incredible.” Meanwhile, Zarco’s teammates from Works Honda, Luca Marini and Joan Mir, also finished within the top 10 during FP1, though neither managed to secure a spot in Q2.
Joan Mir’s Optimism
Joan Mir, who had a promising outing in Thailand despite a crash that thwarted his results, shared a similar sense of optimism regarding his performance at Termas de Río Hondo. “Today I felt capable of staying in the top 10 without major issues,” he stated. “However, I couldn’t pull it all together.”
Despite his struggles, Mir expressed relief, reflecting on his doubts about the bike’s competitiveness at this circuit, which hasn’t traditionally favored his style. “For some reason, I feel positive. We’re much closer than we anticipated. I believe we can contend for positions similar to our results at Buriram.”
