McIlroy and Lowry Fire Up at Zurich Classic
Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry made a significant leap at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, delivering an impressive 11-under round of 61 at TPC Louisiana on Saturday.
The duo showcased their prowess with four birdies and an eagle during the first nine holes, maintaining their momentum with additional birdies at the 10th, 11th, 13th, and 15th holes.
Despite facing a minor setback with a bogey on the challenging par-three 17th, they rebounded spectacularly. McIlroy made a remarkable 30-foot eagle putt on the 18th, ensuring they remained contenders as the tournament progressed.
McIlroy contributed five of the birdie putts along with the eagle, while Lowry added three birdies and an eagle on the par-five seventh.
“I think we played pretty well today,” Lowry remarked following their performance. “There were many holes where both of us had opportunities. We knew we needed to achieve a low score—there’s not much wind out there, and the course is quite manageable. In team play, aiming for at least 10-under is a must.”
Lowry expressed satisfaction with McIlroy’s final eagle, emphasizing that it made for a more enjoyable dinner and placed them in a solid position for the next day’s play.
McIlroy’s eagle putt on the 18th came after a lengthy 90-minute rain delay caused by lightning. He noted that he chose not to dwell on the game during the wait.
“The trick is to avoid getting caught up in the delay,” McIlroy shared. “We had some lunch and watched highlights from last year while discussing dinner plans. The putt wasn’t on my mind during the break, but once back on the course, I focused and executed what I needed to do. I’m thrilled it went in.”
Historically, no team has ever defended their title at the Zurich Classic, but with a strong performance, McIlroy and Lowry have the chance to make history.
